If you have an iMac and are having difficulty making and/or maintaining connections, try the iMac Internal 56k (v.34 Only) Modem Script.  This script forces the modem to connect at 33.6 kbps or lower speeds.  These connections are more stable in situations where your phone line quality is marginal.

  34. For iMac users.  The iMac CD Firmware Update reduces the amount of vibration caused by certain CDs in the internal CD-ROM drive.  This vibration is typically caused by unbalanced CDs when spinning at higher speeds in the drive, which may cause the drive to have difficulty reading the CD.

Apple’s free resource editor.  This program allows you to alter the attributes that make up a file, folder, or even system components.  Great for making minor repairs or customizing your own files.  WARNING: Don’t use this if you don’t know what you’re doing.  You can easily render your system unusable if you aren’t careful.  Always work on a copy of a file you are toying with.
